The 10th annual “Safety Commitment Week” included such activities as “safety stand-downs,” daily safety quizzes, and signing safety pledges, according to R.J. Corman, which owns and operates 19 short lines; offers emergency rail services associated with derailments and natural disasters; provides switching, track construction, track material distribution, and signal design/construction services; and runs a dinner train. Additionally, the company’s Safety Department published articles on its employee communication platform covering:
- Day 1: Pinch Points. Team members were reminded to identify and avoid tasks that could create pinch points, inspect machinery and tools regularly, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Day 2: Red Zones. All were encouraged to maintain constant communication, use proper PPE, and stay “situationally aware” to avoid injuries in red zone injuries—areas surrounding working equipment and machinery that pose a risk of injury.
- Day 3: Slips, Trips, and Falls. R.J. Corman said it emphasized the importance of proper footwear, housekeeping, and adequate lighting to prevent “Slips, Trips, and Falls” incidents, which it noted are common reasons for workplace injuries.
- Day 4: Training and Compliance. “Training and compliance are crucial for maintaining a safe work environment,” the company noted. “We highlighted the importance of understanding and applying safe work practices, and team members were encouraged to communicate with their supervisors and safety representatives.”
- Day 5: Safe Vehicle Operations. The week concluded with a focus on safe vehicle operations, reminding everyone to “maintain a space cushion of safety, recognize driving hazards, and use turn signals appropriately.”
“‘Safety Commitment Week 2025’ was a success, and we are proud of our team members’ dedication to maintaining a safe working environment,” R.J. Corman reported Feb. 11. “Together, we can continue to operate safely and ensure everyone returns home to their families safely.”
