Railway Age’s Short Line and Regional of the Year program recognizes two Honorees and four Honorable Mentions for outstanding achievement—from ingenuity in dealing with the unexpected, safety improvements, and community initiatives to complete turnarounds. These small-road standouts were selected from 29 finalists in the United States and Canada.

For 2025, Rochester & Erie Railway LLC and Railroad Development Corporation’s Iowa Interstate Railroad LLC are our Short Line and Regional Railroads of the Year, respectively. Earning Short Line Honorable Mention are Central Montana Rail Inc., Genesee & Wyoming’s Columbus & Ohio River Rail Road, Regional Rail LLC’s Great Sandhills Railway, and R.J. Corman Railroad Company West Virginia Line.

Inside the March 2025 issue, you’ll also find these feature stories:

  • High Expectations, Hot Market: Editor-in-Chief William C. Vantuono delivers a special report on hopper cars.
  • Looking Beyond Diesel: Contributing Editor Joanna Marsh covers “next-gen” small-road motive power options.
  • Making ‘FasTracks’ in the Mile-High City: Denver RTD represents an impressive success story for rail transit, according to Contributing Editor David Peter Alan.
  • Single Wheelset Changeout Effects on Asymmetric Hollow Wear: Principal Investigator II Ulrich Spangenberg discusses MxV Rail’s research on the root cause(s) of asymmetrically hollow worn wheels.

Plus, Railway Age Capitol Hill Contributing Editor Frank Wilner interviews the Surface Transportation Board’s new Chair, Patrick J. Fuchs, who, at 37, is expected to pursue agency reform and take the lead on reducing the complexity of large cases and establishing an improved voluntary arbitration process. Also, Financial Editor David Nahass discusses “managing through the unknown”; tentativeness and hesitancy do not bode well for any aspect of the rail economy, he writes.
